EARTH DAY 2009 EVENTS

Saturday, April 18
[6:30pm - 8:00pm] -- Earth Day Dinner and Silent Auction -- Join Clinton County Open Lands for the 2009 Earth Day dinner and silent action in the Community Room at the Wilmington Municipal Building. Ralph Dull will be the speaker for the evening. Mr. Dull is the recipient of the 2008 Conservation Farm Family Award for Area IV awarded by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. He and his family farm over 2700 acres in Montgomery County and operate a Future Energy and Conservation Center. Sunday, April 19
[1:00pm - 3:00pm] -- Clinton County Trails Coalition Trail Walk -- The Clinton County Trails Coalition will be hosting a full-length walk of the Wilmington trail. Registration begins at 12:00pm in the Denver Williams Memorial Park parking lot with a $10 registration fee. You may also pre-register on-line.

Tuesday, April 21
[12:00pm - 2:00pm] -- Earth Day Luncheon -- Join Energize Clinton County and the Clinton County Regional Planning Commission to discuss sustainable development with Dr. Mark Partridge, Swank Chair in Rural-Urban Policy at Ohio State University. Dr. Partridge is a leading scholar in rural economic development, and will be discussing "Building Sustainable Communities using Good Local Government." Events at Southern State Community College
[9:00am - 10:00] -- Yoga for Kids -- Join Tammy Reed of Main Street Yoga Center for an hour of fun with yoga. Your kids will explore ways to move and groove their bodies for health, balance, focus, and fun. We will explore animal and nature poses through yoga and earth day fun!
[9:00am - 1:00pm] -- Clinton County Master Gardeners Plant Sale -- Clinton County Master Gardeners will be holding their annual plant sale in the Southern State Community College Wilmington Campus Lobby. There will be a selection of locally grown vegetable, herb and flower bedding plants, hanging baskets and planters.
[9:00am - 1:00pm] -- Seeds of Change: taking action after the inspiration -- As a follow up to the "Clinton County Reads" book selection for spring, "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle", local food producers and providers have been invited to answer questions about their farms, CSA's and businesses and how buying local can have a positive impact not only on our health and environment, but also the economy of our community. A guide to locally produced foods within a 50 mile radius of Wilmington will be available.
[10:00am - 12:00pm] -- Butterfly Education Event -- "No Child Left Indoors" will be hosting a Butterfly Education Event for children at Southern State Community College. Activities include construction of butterfly habitat, care and feeding of caterpillars and release instructions. All participants will recieve a live caterpillar and resource guides. [10:00am - 12:00pm] -- Reptiles show with Eric Davenport -- Join Eric to explore the world of our native reptiles. Eric's program will feature a variety of reptiles for up-close viewing and petting.

Other Earth Day Events
[1:00pm - 3:00pm] -- Eco House & Community Gardens Tour at Wilmington College -- Come and tour the Eco-Houses ecologically responsible living and learning communities at Wilmington College (246 Linton Drive). You'll be able to meet with students, and see the simple products and features that have helped Wilmington College students reduce their energy consumption by about 50%. You'll also hear about their energy monitoring methods and what they hoped to learn for the 2008/2009 Academic year.
[1:00pm - 3:00pm] -- Tour of Terrell-Hanaghan Nature Preserve with Bob Thobaben -- Join Bob Thobaben on a trail hike through Terrell-Hanaghan Nature Preserve. Hikers should meet at the Sourthern State Community College parking lot and are strongly encouraged to bring good walking/hiking shoes. This event will take place rain or shine.

2009 EARTH DAY DINNER

Clinton County Open Lands, Inc. would like to invite you to attend the 2009 Clinton County Earth Day Dinner and Silent Auction. We are particularly pleased this year to have Ralph Dull as our speaker. He and his family farm about 2700 acres in Montgomery County and their many accomplishments are described below. His talk should be informative and entertaining.

The agenda for the evening is as follows:
5:30-6:00 – Social time and silent auction
6:00 – Welcome and blessing
6:15-6:45 – Dinner (vegetarian option available; we will use local foods available)
6:45-7:00 – Short reports from conservation groups on activities in the past year
7:00-7:30 – Ralph Dull, 2008 ODNR Conservation Farm Family Award winner, Area IV
7:30 -- Silent auction final bids and adjournment until April 2010

Reservations and cost of dinner: The cost of the dinner is $20 for adults, $10 for students (college and under) and free for 5 yrs and younger.

The event will be held in the Community Room, 1st Floor of Wilmington City Municipal Building, 69 N. South Street, Wilmington, OH 45177. Handicapped accessible facility.

Pay at the door but we are asking for reservations to help us plan the dinner. If anyone needs help with the cost of the dinner let Laura know -- we want everyone to be able to attend! Seating limited to 100.

Ralph Dull and the Dull Family are the winners of the 2008 Conservation Farm Family Award for Area IV awarded by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The Dull family farms 2700 acres in Montgomery County. Major crops include soybeans and corn and hogs are also raised. Conservation techniques include no-till, crop rotation, and the installation of 6,800 feet of grass waterways.

The Dull homestead also operates a Future Energy and Conservation Center. Mr. Ralph Dull and partner Preston Mote have created an exhibit area that demonstrates alternative, renewable energy sources, including an HVAC system that uses sources such as geothermal, hydrogen, and a corn burning stove. Wind turbines supplement electricity from traditional sources. The center also features many exhibits and displays about organizations and projects dedicated to conservation and alternative, renewable energies. A natural-air bin drying of corn for feed reduces the need for propane. Governor Ted Strickland, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown and the Director of Agriculture have held meetings at the Energy and Conservation Center. When asked to describe their conservation philosophy, they replied this family farm is cheerfully obligated to provide a livelihood to its twelve family employees and to be ever conscious of conservation of all people, the soil, wildlife and the atmosphere.

2009 EARTH DAY LUNCHEON

Join the Clinton County Regional Planning Commission and Energize Clinton County on April 21st to discuss sustainable economic development.

The 2009 Earth Day Luncheon will feature Dr. Mark Partridge, Swank Chair in Rural-Urban Policy at Ohio State University. Dr. Partridge--one of the country's leading scholars in urban-rural economic development-- has published over 100 academic and scholarly papers and his work has been ranked among the top 1,000 economists, in the world. He is co-author a book entitled The Geography of American Poverty: Is there a Role for Place-Based Policy?, published by the W.E. Upjohn Institute. He is currently the lead investigator on an Infrastructure Canada grant to examine rural-urban interactions and for an Appalachian Regional Commission project evaluating measures of community distress. Dr. Partridge’s current research interests include investigating rural-urban interdependence, why some communities grow faster than others, and innovations in regional policy and governance.

Dr. Partridge's talk will be on "Building Sustainable Communities using Good Local Government."
